Opening Thoughts

Punishment in America has been an ongoing practice since the beginning of time. It has been argued what its true purpose really is. Punishments are generally looked at as a deterrent against crime, which when done correctly can help the fight against crime. The American punishment regime has used fines (monetary tickets for violating lesser crimes such as parking in a lot without the proper parking pass), probation (sanction period of time where you are held accountable under certain rules by your probation officier), incarceration (sanctioned amount of time where one is confined to a prison or jail), and capital punishment(put to death as penalty for crime, worst case scenerio) as their go to model for deterring crime. These types of punishment can have more than one outcome and often times do. In America, the type of punishment given to the offender usually but not always fits the crime that was committed. Aside from the death penalty America has turned away from physical punishment and has relied on a more mental approach to punishing criminals.
